Conference and hybrid meeting mono fold: lav + ceiling + room, dual-room guest, phone speaker

Zoom Rooms, Teams Rooms, Google Meet hardware, and lecture-capture mixes often sound fine on room speakers and USB headsets. Remote attendees on phone speakers and Bluetooth hear thin speech, hollow presenters, or a ceiling array that combs under the lav. That is usually duplicated paths (lav + ceiling + room all open), dual-room guests with shared content a few milliseconds apart, or a stereo bed that was never folded before send. Fix path count and polarity first. Frequency-aware phase repair belongs only after residual L/R fights remain on stereo material you must keep stereo.

PHIXER is free stereo phase-repair (VST3/CLAP/AU · Win/Mac/Linux) from Riverflux Audio. Frequency-aware phase rotation for leftover L/R fights on stereo material. It is not a Zoom plugin, not an AEC replacement, and not a substitute for mono audition of the conference send bus. Polarity and timing first; PHIXER after residual spectral fights.

What conference / hybrid mono failure sounds like

Fast mono audition (about 60 seconds)

  1. Solo the conference send / lecture-capture / matrix bus (not only room speakers). Flip a utility to mono, or listen on a phone speaker.
  2. A/B lav muted vs open under ceiling. Then ceiling muted vs open under room/table. Note what disappears: chest, consonants, room tone.
  3. Solo pairs: lav vs ceiling, ceiling vs room, local room vs remote bridge, stereo bed vs mono fold.
  4. Check correlation on the send bus if you can (correlation meters). Then confirm on a real phone speaker.

Order of operations (before spectral phase rotation)

1. One hero speech path per talker

Do not leave lav, ceiling array, and table/room all open on the same person. Pick the cleaner path (often lav for presenter, ceiling for open discussion). Mute duplicates. Stacked identical speech is the fastest hollow on fold. Related: remote podcast / Zoom guest.

2. Polarity if a path flips

Some room DSPs, USB bridges, and virtual cables invert. Flip lav or a secondary capture when chest returns immediately. Guide: polarity vs phase.

3. Small delay only after hero path is chosen

If lav must sit under a quieter ceiling for backup, delay-align the secondary to the hero rather than leaving raw arrival offset. Prefer muting the secondary when possible.

4. Prefer centered speech; skip wideners on VO

Hard L/R guest layouts and stereo imagers on speech sound wide in headsets and collapse on phone. Keep talkers centered. Social destinations fold: YouTube / social.

5. Dual-room / hybrid guest: one capture path

When Room A bridges Room B, avoid feeding the same guest twice (local mic + remote program). Mute the duplicate at the matrix. Classic hybrid hollow on phone fold.

6. Only then audition residual L/R spectral fights

If a stereo bed (intro music, stereo room print) must stay stereo and fold still hollows a band after the steps above, gentle frequency-aware phase rotation can help. Prove it with mono A/B. Speech paths almost never need this if hero-path hygiene is clean.

Conference send checklist (to go live)

1. Label lav vs ceiling vs room vs bridge paths

Name every mic and bridge feed so operators know what hits Zoom Rooms, Teams, Meet, or the lecture encoder. Ambiguous stacks get left open and comb on fold.

2. Mono-check send bus alone, then with full room

Solo presenter lav in mono. Then open ceiling and room in mono. Note fights. Related: OBS livestream mono.

3. Watch phone and BT destinations

Most remote attendees hear mono or near-mono. Guides: YouTube / social, remote podcast.

4. Optional master-bus mono habit before the call

Host-agnostic habit: master bus mono checklist.

When NOT to use PHIXER here

Quick path: Solo send bus in mono → one hero speech path per talker → polarity if a bridge flips → mute dual-room duplicates → center speech, skip wideners on VO → mono-check with full room → PHIXER only for leftover stereo cancellation on a bed → confirm on a phone speaker.
